Liberal Housing shadow minister Braedon Clark will be introducing two bills today to tackle ongoing issues in Nova Scotia’s housing industry.

The province’s Residential Tenancies Act lacks an effective enforcement system, leaving tenants and landlords with nowhere to turn when there is an issue. An amendment to the Residential Tenancies Act will create a provincial compliance unit to ensure accountability with meaningful fines and sanctions, similar to what’s done in Ontario and British Columbia.

The Youth Housing Strategy Act would create a provincial housing strategy centered on young adults in the province. Halifax has the alarming distinction of being the most unaffordable city to live in for young people and with home ownership among young adults on a rapid decline in Nova Scotia, a housing strategy focused on this specific demographic is needed more than ever.
