Angela Simmonds has been acclaimed as the Liberal candidate for Preston and will represent the Nova Scotia Liberal Party in the next provincial election.

Angela is from Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia and now resides in the community of North Preston. She is a dedicated social justice advocate and esteemed lawyer who has used her voice to promote equity for African Nova Scotians. Most notably, she is the author of the report, “This Land Is Our Land: African Nova Scotian Voice from the Preston Area Speak Up.” Earlier this year, Angela was named the Executive Director of the Land Titles Initiative in the Office of Equity and Anti-Racism where she works to address the legacy of systemic racism in historic African Nova Scotian communities.

“I am thrilled to be the Liberal candidate for the riding of Preston, and I am privileged to be part of Team Rankin,” said Simmonds. “I am looking forward to working with and supporting my communities to make a difference. I believe communities are where the change begins  let’s make change together!”

Angela has been recognized for her leadership and has been the recipient of the Judge Sparks award, Burnley “Rocky” Jones Human Rights Award, and was recently acknowledged as one of the Top 100 Most Accomplished African Canadian Black Women in Canada in 2020. Angela has worked as the Manager of Equity and Access to Justice for the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and completed her articling at Nova Scotia Legal Aid after graduating from the Schulich School of Law in 2017. Angela has been married to her husband Dean for 22 years and they are the proud parents of three children.

“I am thrilled to have Angela join our Liberal team,” said Premier Iain Rankin. “Her impressive background of promoting equity and anti-racism in this province will make her an excellent MLA for Preston.”
