With the moratorium on oil and gas exploration on Georges Bank set to expire on December 31, 2022, the Nova Scotia Liberal Party is calling on the Houston government to extend the moratorium indefinitely during the 2022 spring legislative session.
The Georges Bank Moratorium has played a critical role in protecting a lucrative fishing industry in the province, as well as securing thousands of jobs for Nova Scotians. Without it, the economic and environmental risks are severe.
“The moratorium helps thousands of Nova Scotians secure jobs. Renewing it indefinitely would have a tremendous impact on our community,” says Clare MLA Ronnie LeBlanc. “The economic and environmental benefits that are preserved by this moratorium are too great to let it slip through the cracks.”
In a time of such uncertainty, the Houston government must take this step to maintain stability for the people of Southwestern Nova Scotia.
There is no time to waste in extending the moratorium — indefinitely.
