About Angela Simmonds

Angela is from Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia and now resides in the community of North Preston. She is a dedicated social justice advocate and esteemed lawyer who has used her voice to promote equity for African Nova Scotians. Most notably, she is the author of the report, “This Land Is Our Land: African Nova Scotian Voice from the Preston Area Speak Up.” In early 2021, Angela was named the Executive Director of the Land Titles Initiative in the Office of Equity and Anti-Racism where she worked to address the legacy of systemic racism in historic African Nova Scotian communities.

Angela has been recognized for her leadership and has been the recipient of the Judge Sparks award, Burnley “Rocky” Jones Human Rights Award, and was recently acknowledged as one of the Top 100 Most Accomplished African Canadian Black Women in Canada in 2020. Angela has worked as the Manager of Equity and Access to Justice for the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and completed her articling at Nova Scotia Legal Aid after graduating from the Schulich School of Law in 2017. Angela has been married to her husband Dean for over 22 years, and they are the proud parents of three children.

She currently serves as Deputy Speaker of the House, as well as the Shadow Minister for Justice; Seniors and Long-Term Care; and African Nova Scotian Affairs.
